Digital Orca

Like something out of the film P, Douglas Coupland's community art work of art, Electronic Orca looks like it is bouncing right out of videos gaming. Or maybe a great Lego set.

Coupland is better known for his composing than his capabilities as a artist, but that does not make Electronic Orca any more unique. The sculpture was set up during 2009 for the Calgary Conference Center Art Venture. Coupland designed the whale to stimulate the harbour region's record with a typical vision off the european shore, the fantastic whale. Of course given Coupland's penchant for discovering technological innovation in his composing, it is no real shock that he has also presented the factor of technological innovation even when developing an respect to natural world.

Since it is completely set up there by the beach, the angular whale had to be designed of of durable metal, covered with a safety powdered covering making up the whale's marks. Even though the whale is durable enough to deal with the harsh negative results of the beach climate, going up the on the rough monster is prohibited.

The landowners, a company known as Pavco, desired the computer age Free Willy hopeful to signify the region, and while it does its job, it also symbolizes Coupland's perspective of life in our scanned times. In this day and age even the dolphins are getting in on the technical crisis.
